Topic 85040

Over at Einstein@home we can see on the tasks pages how many tasks are active, have error, waiting for validation, pending etc. The amount is between brackets. It would be very nice if we can have that here with the new look.

Here's one. When will the forums here (and the whole site for that matter) fill out over the whole width of the screen? At the moment you're only using 50% of the screen. Einstein's site and the BOINC forums on it use the full width of the page. See below how that looks in pictures.

Einstein@Home forum index, full width

Albert forum index, using 50% of the page

Images resized from 1920x1080p to 640x480p, but the amount of white space is really the same. It hurts my eyes this amount of white. Doesn't really look too professional. If you then must put it in the middle because (for whatever reason) Drupal won't do screen filling forums, at least put some image over the background that scrolls all the way to the bottom.

Hi Jord,

Doesn't really look too professional

That's certainly a subjective definition. One could argue that it wouldn't be "professional" to do it otherwise because using the full screen width would not be ergonomic because of how people read text. That's why books are in portrait instead of landscape and print media often uses multiple vertical columns. While I'm not the key designer of this theme I do understand it's choices because I've a background in this area. Having white on black is typically also much easier to read and less fatiguing than having white on black for instance - which doesn't mean that everyone follows that route. The same goes for background images which distract the reader from the actual page content or at least don't guide the eye to it. What makes things worse (read: even harder): these topics always involve the matter of taste or personal preference. We can't solve it for everyone but we try to solve it for most people, following best practices for UI design.

Cheers,
Oliver

Having all text squatted in

Message 80412 in response to message 80409

Having all text squatted in the middle of the screen will make it easier for people to post a wall of text. Any bigger post will automatically become a wall of text, especially when only half of the screen is utilized.

Now, here's how my phone does this. It is also not utilizing the whole width of the screen, be it rotated horizontal or vertical. Especially the initial zoomed out image (1) is scary. Now I must agree that the phone does not do the whiteouts on either side. Or at least not on the indexes, only slightly on the text/post. That's with the Dolphin web browser for Android.

Now, this seems to be a problem with Drupal forums, or maybe it's their feature. I see this weekly when perusing the ESO forums, but at least there they've added a background image that doesn't make the background all white: https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/

As for subjective definitions, if I wanted to only use half the screen, I wouldn't buy a full HD monitor. Even wonder what it looks like on a CRT monitor. Probably even worse.

I agree that image one looks

I agree that image one looks bad because it doesn't use the available content (grey) area. The others look fine to me though. We'll look into this.

I use two 27" screens but I certainly don't want to read a single line (!) of text across its entire width. That's the point I wanted to make. Wide screens are useful to allow for more content in parallel. Concerning text display this would rather be two portrait pages, not a single one that gets kinda blown up to landscape width.

If you're referring to this page then it's still on the to do list.

A standard BOINC web site

A standard BOINC web site would be my wish. On this one, I have to spent a lot of time just trying to find basic info, which on normal sites I find within a split second. WHY? Your site is confusing, does not provide info intuitively. I always wonder, what motivates anybody to do weird things like that. Why don't you stick with what works? With what every cruncher is used to?

Hi KPX, The reason is

Hi KPX,

The reason is simple: the standard BOINC website isn't as intuitive as you personally might think. Keep in mind that you already got used to it. New users might indeed find the original page overloaded, too complex and therefore inaccessible. We know that we won't (and can't) please everybody with the new design but feel that it is indeed an improvement over the original site.

Best,
Oliver
